Online payments with PayPal

Table of Contents

Introduction

In this article, we’ll go through setting up the online booking system to take payments via PayPal. PayPal allows your customers to make payments through your online booking system using either their existing PayPal account or a credit or debit card.

PayPal’s fees are also incredibly competitive, especially with other notable providers.

Please note: This integration is only available as part of our latest booking system (which looks like the image below). If you are using one of our older booking systems, we can get you upgraded to our latest booking system, at no additional cost.

Setting up online payment

To receive online payments, you first need to create yourself a PayPal business account. PayPal business accounts can be created very quickly, and there are fewer hoops to jump through than other 3rd party payment providers.

You can create a PayPal account by going here.

Pay close attention to any messages or warnings when creating the account. You must validate your account by confirming your contact information; otherwise, they may hold received funds for a short period of time.

Once you have created a PayPal account, click here to get logged in to the developer dashboard.

Get logged in, and you’ll be able to create an API key so that our booking system can send payments to your PayPal account.

You should now be on a page similar to this.

Now do the following:

  1. Ensure that Live is clicked.
  2. Click Create App.
  3. Give the App a name. It doesn’t matter what this is called, but it’s easy to recognise later call it Motasoft Online Payment. Click Create App.
  4. On this page, take a copy of the ClientID.
  5. Click Show and take a copy of the Secret.

Once you have the ClientID and the Secret, get in touch with our support team and get these credentials sent across to us.

Once we have received these, we can complete the configuration required on our end.

Where to view payment status in VGM

You can view whether a payment has been made against an online booking by viewing the Shopping Basket. The shopping basket is a container for all of the information in an online booking, and you can view these by navigating to Financial > Shopping Baskets

At a glance, you can see in the merchant column if a payment has been received. If you open up the shopping basket, you can get more information by looking at the payment details. Typically, the payment state will be completed, and the message will give you more information.

If the state says Pending, this indicates that your PayPal account might not be completely verified, so you should log into the account and ensure the account is verified.
